July 29-August 5: Most Prestigious Week In Science History

1-      Oxygen Discovery: Joseph Priestley, the French minister, discovered the element oxygen on August 1, 1774. He discovered oxygen while studying the red crust created by mercury when heated. He received much credit after publishing his work in 1775.

2-      Neanderthal Discovery: On August 3, 1908, two clergymen discovered the first, nearly complete, buried skeleton of a Neanderthal in a cave at La Chapelle-aux-Saints, France. Further archaeological digs in the area revealed the presence of more than 1000 fossil pieces.

3-      Neil Armstrong Birthday: The first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong, was born on August 5, 1930, in Ohio. Armstrong was a test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, U.S. Naval Aviator, and a NASA astronaut.

4-      NASA’s Birthday: President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space act on July 29, 1958, and this act created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA.

5-      Reaching The North Pole: On August 3, 1958, the USS Nautilus became the first submarine to travel beneath the North Pole.

6-      First Moon Photos: On July 31, 1964, the U.S. space probe Ranger 7 released the first close-up images of the moon’s surface. These images paved the way for the moon’s landing five years later.

7-      First Moon’s Drive: On July 31, 1971, Dave Scott became the first person to drive a vehicle on the moon.
